Lately, I’ve been really into the Kings of Leon–which is why I was super pumped when I saw that Rolling Stone had them on the cover. The cover story is probably one of the best I’ve read in a while–it painted such a vivid picture of the guys and their upbringing as a moderately crazy, borderline alcoholic preacher’s sons that it made me love them even more.
I first bought a Kings of Leon CD a few years ago, uploaded it to my itunes, listened to it once and then pretty much forgot about it. It wasn’t until their most recent album, “Only By The Night” came out that I started actually paying attention to them. This album is honestly nothing like anything I’ve heard before–it’s like if Elvis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Elvis Costello fused together and had a musically precocious lovechild…and even that doesn’t even begin to explain the bluesy, southern alternative rock vibe they give off.
They’re upbeat yet relaxing…they are what I HOPED Rooney would be (but alas, like most bands, Rooney sold out to prime time TV [The OC] and began to suck).
Give them a listen, you won’t be disappointed.
Oh, and read the Rolling Stone story to see how they got their name. It’s pretty hysterical. (HINT: They have an uncle named Leon…)
