As many of you may know, the New York State Senate has been a circus since Monday afternoon when two dissident Democrats switched sides and staged a sort of Senate coup…or circus as I’m calling it. (P.S. There was a woman dressed as a clown outside of the State Legislative building yesterday who said she came to “join the circus.” I giggled a bit.)
ANYWAY, a bit of back ground: On Monday Sen. Pedro Espada Jr. of the Bronx and Hiram Monserrate of Queens helped the Republicans allegedly take control of the Senate after voting with the GOP to overthrow the fledgling Democratic majority and majority leader Malcolm Smith. Democrats said they’ll challenge the move in court which they tired to do today, but a Supreme Court judge denied the Democrats an injunction. The new coalition Senate had a session, but no official business was done. The session lasted less than a half hour with Sen.Monseratte, Sen. Dean Skelos and Sen. Espada all speaking to the chamber. No work could be completed because all the bill jackets were locked in the desk. Up until yesterday the Democrats were still hiding the chamber keys from the Republicans and their new elected leader Sen. Skelos. Eventually Sen. Espada acquired the keys through some unknown means…yet the bill jackets were still locked up? Circus. Fiasco. Bonanza.
This who situation is completely out of control. Now, while I’m upset that the Democrats lost power (I was really hoping for marriage equality to pass) what irks me the most is the Senators’ inability (both the Republicans and the Democrats) to get their heads out of their asses and think about something other than themselves. While they’re prancing around the Capitol playing “Keep-away” with keys like a bunch of stubborn 5 year olds, there are people in NYS who were hoping their government would pass some new legislature during this session and are now horrified by the childish, disrespectful behavior that’s going on in the big-top circus tent we used to call the Senate chamber.
GROW UP. Have a conference. Sit down. Discuss. FIGURE YOUR SHIT OUT. You have a job to do and that job does not involve flitting around the Capitol like you’re entitled to the world. Okay, Democrats, blow to your ego, you’re relatively smart people, put your heads together and come up with a negotiation. I know the Governor is on your side, but he really doesn’t have a say in the matter.
If it were up to me, the people of NY would get to vote on who’s really in power, but sadly, it’s not up to me.
I guess I’m stuck waiting to see when the circus is going to end.
I should get some popcorn, because it could be a while.
