I was originally going to blog about Iggy Pop’s new album today…but when I finally listened to the whole thing last night I realized that while it’s a good, classically “Iggy” album there’s not much else to say about it that I haven’t said before when I was listening to previews.
What I do want to write about is a new band I discovered the other day called Dirty Projectors. They are so much fun. The only way I can really explain them is if Radiohead had a couture lovechild with Bjork. Pure awesomeness.
I had heard about them in passing from Indie rock stations in high school, but they didn’t truly get my attention until their album Bitte Orca came out earlier this month. The album’s been on my iPod for a while but I didn’t get around to really listening to it until my drive back from Buffalo on Sunday.
They’re an experimental band formed in 2002 by Dave Longstreth. The actual make-up of the band shifts in a Polyphonic Spree, music collective kind of way. Bjork thinks they’re terrific and I do, too.
They’ve got some weird vocals going on but their sound is more like if Thom Yorke took some uppers. They are like a peppy Radiohead meets the Icelandic vocal queen.
It’s really hard to explain what they sound like without sounding like a hipster douche, so I’m not even going to try anymore.
