On my way into the office today I was browsing through the Capital Region’s lackluster selection of radio stations when one of them started playing “SexyBack” by Justin Timberlake.
This song is infectious. It’s catchy, it’s fun, it’s everything that a good pop song should be. You don’t have to think about the “deeper” meaning…it’s about a dude who is “sexy” and he’s bringing it to everyone he comes across. Not difficult to understand. It’s about sex–“you see these shackles baby I’m your slave…” Also not difficult to understand.
It mixes three things that people love–hot beats, a catchy chorus and sex. It’s also by Justin Timberlake who has this mass appeal even outside of his fame as a former *NSYNC-er. Guys want to be him and girls want to be with him. He’s matured from the frosted tips, Oakley sunglasses and baggy Fubu pants into a bona fide pop star who can make legitimate music…not that “Tearin’ Up My Heart” wasn’t legitimate, it was, but only in the confines of the 90’s…which is a difficult concept to explain…see, somethings should just stay in the 90’s like, for example, *NSYNC, Limp Bizkit, Nick Carter, ski goggles as a fashion statement, Celine Dion and Creed, to name a few.
But I digress.
I was singing along to “SexyBack,” when it really hit me what a great song it is, and I mean even despite its popularity (“SexyBack” was the longest-running number one single of 2006 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, staying seven weeks at the top.)
“SexyBack” was released in July of 2006, a month after I graduated from high school–that was three years ago. You know a song is great when it can still be played on the radio three years later without being part of a “throwback weekend” and without even a hint of irony. The song is just as good no matter how many times you hear it.
And all this, my friends, is what makes a truly iconic song and a truly iconic artist.
What’s the point of this post? I guess there really isn’t one other than the fact that I do honestly think that Justin Timberlake is the new force to be reckoned with in pop music since Michael Jackson’s passing.
It’s also, I guess, my way of getting my head out of my summer workload for a minute and back into music. From now, up until the VMA’s on September 13th, I am going to try to post at least a few times a week about current music and my picks for who should win what awards…I’ll also be finishing a “VMA drinking game” that’s already in the works and I’ll post that as well.
Anyway, enjoy the nice weather and have fun…until next post…keep bringing sexy back.
