It’s moonman time, people!

Yep, the VMAs will air on MTV on September 13th and they’ve just recently released the nominees. I know the VMAs aren’t as high profile or as “important” as the Grammys to the music industry but if you ask me, they should be. I feel like even if the VMAs don’t encapsulate the best music, per se, they do shine a bright light on what’s hot in pop culture, and there’s something to be said about that.

Pop culture is essentially the driving force of every aspect of industry these days. Wether it’s hot new artists selling cars with their music in TV commercials or rockstars making affordable clothing lines, pop culture has a hand in everything from the cars we drive, the food we eat and the cell phones we talk on. Diddy (is he Diddy or P.Diddy these days? I lost track, and frankly I don’t care) and other stars like him honestly may have won President Obama the election…pop culture may have decided the outcome of a presidential race. Wrap your head around that.

The VMAs celebrate pop culture and that’s why I think they’re important. Here’s a list of the nominees and my choices for who I think should win (in larger type) along with a short explanation of why…enjoy. (P.S. VMA drinking game coming soon…)

MTV’s 2009 Video Music Award Nominees

VIDEO OF THE YEAR
Beyoncé – “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
Lady Gaga – “Poker Face”
Eminem – “We Made You”
Kanye West – “Love Lockdown”
Britney Spears – “Womanizer”

I’m going with Lady Gaga, and not just because I love her, but because this video launched her career, which is HUGE at the moment in case you haven’t noticed. She’s got 3 number one hits in a row off of her debut album and thanks to the internet the “Poker Face” video helped her do it. My runner up? Beyoncé because that video was more famous in its mockery than it was as an actual entity.

BEST NEW ARTIST
Lady Gaga – “Poker Face”
Drake – “Best I Ever Had”
3OH!3 – “Don’t Trust Me”
Kid Cudi – “Day N’ Nite”
Asher Roth – “I Love College”

I’m going with Gaga again because she’s the only one who’s had more than one number one hit off of her debut album…but 3OH!3 might get it just because I feel like they have teeny bopper appeal. If we’re going for new artist success, Gaga SHOULD win.

BEST MALE VIDEO
Eminem – “We Made You”
Kanye West – “Love Lockdown”
Jay-Z – “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)”
T.I. feat. Rihanna – “Live Your Life”
Ne-Yo – “Miss Independent”

T.I. might get the sympathy vote because he’s in the slammer but for pure video direction and artistry I think it has to go to Kanye.

BEST FEMALE VIDEO
Katy Perry – “Hot n Cold”
Beyoncé – “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
Kelly Clarkson – “My Life Would Suck Without You”
Lady Gaga – “Poker Face”
Taylor Swift – “You Belong With Me”
Pink – “So What”

Pink and Katy Perry both have hilarious vids, but I’m going with Beyoncé on this one. “Single Ladies,” a simple video, took on a life of it’s own being mocked by the Jonas Brothers and by SNL.

BEST HIP-HOP VIDEO
Eminem – “We Made You”
Kanye West – “Love Lockdown”
Jay-Z – “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)”
Asher Roth – “I Love College”
Flo Rida – “Right Round”

As much as I would like Asher Roth to win this one just because it would make for HILARIOUS TV, I think Jay-Z is going to nail it. Not only was his comeback an awesome success but the video is just damn cool.

BEST POP VIDEO
Beyoncé – “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
Lady Gaga – “Poker Face”
Britney Spears – “Womanizer”
Cobra Starship feat. Leighton Meester – “Good Girls Go Bad”
Wisin y Yandel – “Abusadora”

Hmm, this is tough but I honestly think Britney is going to pull it out. “Circus” is her best album since the 90s and “Womanizer” was the perfect breakout pop single for her. Plus, Brit is back to looking hot in this video, double plus, she rolls around naked in a steam room.

BEST ROCK VIDEO
Coldplay – “Viva la Vida”
Kings of Leon – “Use Somebody”
Green Day – “21 Guns”
Fall Out Boy – “I Don’t Care”
Paramore – “Decode”

I would like Coldplay to win just because the artistic direction and cinematography was so incredible, but this is MTV and as much as it pains me to admit it, Green Day is probably going to take it…or perhaps Fall Out Boy because Pete Wentz and MTV go hand in hand.

BEST COREOGRAPHY
Beyoncé – “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
Britney Spears – “Circus”
Ciara feat. Justin Timberlake – “Love Sex Magic”
AR Rahman & Pussy Cat Dolls feat. Nicole Scherzinger – “Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)”
Kristinia DeBarge – “Goodbye”

Ciara feat. JT OBVIOUSLY. If it involves dancing Justin is ALWAYS going to do it best. Hands down.

BEST DIRECTION
Beyoncé – “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
Lady Gaga – “Paparazzi”
Green Day – “21 Guns”
Cobra Starship feat. Leighton Meester – “Good Girls Go Bad”
Britney Spears – “Circus”

Britney–there’s a lot of crazy stuff going on in the video, fire, elephants, tons of circus shenanigans.

BEST EDITING
Beyoncé – “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
Britney Spears – “Circus”
Miley Cyrus – “7 Things”
Coldplay – “Viva la Vida”
Lady Gaga – “Paparazzi”

Lady Gaga. “Paparazzi” is more like a mini movie and was really well put together. Let’s face it. Lady Gaga knows how to make a damn music video.

BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS
Beyoncé – “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
Gnarls Barkely – “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul”
Lady Gaga – “Paparazzi”
Eminem – “We Made You”
Kanye West feat. Mr Hudson – “Paranoid”

Ugh. Kanye. The man is cocky but he knows how to pull out all the stops.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Beyoncé – “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
Coldplay – “Viva la Vida”
Lady Gaga – “Paparazzi”
Green Day – “21 Guns”
Britney Spears – “Circus”

This is another one that Coldplay SHOULD win but that Green Day will probably take.

BEST ART DIRECTION
Beyoncé – “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
Britney Spears – “Circus”
Lady Gaga – “Paparazzi”
Gnarls Barkley – “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul”
Coldplay – “Viva la Vida”

Lady Gaga. “Paparazzi” has some outstanding visuals.

BREAKTHROUGH VIDEO
Death Cab for Cutie – “Grapevine Fires”
Gnarls Barkely – “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul”
Cold War Kids – “I’ve Seen Enough”
Anjulie – “Boom”
Chairlift – “Evident Utensil”
Bat for Lashes – “Daniel”
Major Lazer – “Hold the Line”
Passion Pit – “The Reeling”
Matt & Kim – “Lessons Learned”
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Heads Will Roll”

This one I’m not too sure about actually, but I’d like to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs win because I like the song and the video and it’d be nice to see Karen O give an acceptance speech. She’s so awesome.

*NEW CATEGORY* BEST VIDEO (THAT SHOULD HAVE WON A MOONMAN)
U2 – “Where the Streets Have No Name”
Dr. Dre – “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang”
Beastie Boys – “Sabotage”
Björk – “Human Behavior”
Radiohead – “Karma Police”
George Michael – “Freedom”
Foo Fighters – “Everlong”
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – “Into the Great Wide open”
OK Go – “Here It Goes Again”
David Lee Roth – “California Girls”

I’d like to see Radiohead (that vid is trippy) or the Beasties (because their videos are always entertaining) but I think it’s going to be OK Go because its internet fame is still fresh in everyone’s mind.

Agree? Disagree? Let me know!
