What does my favorite “Gossip Girl,” Taylor Momsen, sound like on her band’s new album? Like Courtney Love got off the smack, never met Kurt and had yet to chain smoke Newport menthols out of a hole in her neck.
In other words: I kind of like it.
Taylor’s band, The Pretty Reckless, is heavy on the guitar and sexual innuendo…which is weird if you remember that TayMomz is only 16…a fact that’s awkwardly played up on the track “Goin’ Down”: “I’m just 16 if you know what I mean, do you mind if I take off my dress?”
Taylor. Keep your clothes on. Getting naked at 16 didn’t work out for you on “Gossip Girl” and it certainly won’t in real life. Case in point: Miley Cyrus.
The songs are poppy and alt-rocky. Taylor has a really interesting vocal range that actually sounds really nice, particularly in “My Medicine” where she starts off in a pretty falsetto and ends up grumbling into the mic.
The album drops on June 22 and the first single, “Make Me Wanna Die,” is available on iTunes right now. In the meantime you can stream the album for free on Billboard.com.
